i am sure by now you know how much i love finding new artists and illustrators. i am a little obsessed and absolutely in awe of the talent that some people have and the art they create. sometimes i spend hours browsing the net in search of charming new art to hang on the wall or add to my own personal collection. my latest discovery is the Honeycup shop on Etsy. i just love the style of the illustrations and was curious to find out more about the artist behind these magical works of art.
i decided to contact Simone and ask her some questions about her art and her creative process. i was so thrilled to receive an email in response and was quite delighted and surprised by some of her answers.
my illustrations were created just because i always liked cute little characters, doodling and playing with different styles of art. the illustrations weren’t actually my main focus. they were just something to do for fun and experiment with. the fact that people are interested in my Honeycup illustrations is kind of cool and surprising at the same time because i only really began illustrating about a year ago.
prior to that, i had a huge fear over my artistic abilities for a long time. whenever i used to draw, i found it impossible to concentrate. it wasn’t an enjoyable thing for me to sit down and draw. i was very hard on myself. very critical. it wasn’t until i learned to just let go that i began to enjoy my art. i still have days when i struggle with that “inner critic”, but when i see my illustrations coming to life… i get rather excited.
my inspirations come from all things innocent, cute and sweet. i love children. i have worked with children for years. reading them countless books and seeing their faces light up from the stories and imagery has always been an inspiration. i like to think of myself as a big kid at heart.
as a child i loved all the classic children’s book characters like Mrs. Tiggy Winkle, Babar, Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh, Miffy and all of the Wind in the Willow figures. all have remained dear to my heart.
two of my favorite books are “When We Were Very Young” and “Now We Are Six” by A. A. Milne. the poems always conjure up creativity and imagination for me.
i’m inspired by nature as well. a lot of my previous work was about nature and the simple things in life. capturing special little moments, simple moments in life that we tend to forget or not pay attention to.
i like to make people happy. i like happy things. simple things. but never sad things unless there is a happy ending ;)
